’twas a dark and stormy night — no, actually it was a bright, mild and sunny afternoon as an intrepid band of BMCUers undertook an impromptu exploration of a new run: the right bank of the Weber River from Wanship to Morgan.
I expected a handful of cars and people but in fact there were more than a dozen cars and two dozen people on the run. We assembled at Hogle Zoo and headed up over Emigration Canyon to Mountain Dell, where we hopped on I-80 to a chorus of hunter gun shots in the distance. Then we cruised 21 miles to Wanship, where we paused for photos and r-e-l-i-e-f. From there we proceeded on Hoytsville Road through Hoytsville, Coalville, and Echo, enjoying small town charms, awesome Hallowe’en displays, and nary a car passing in either direction, IIRC.
Pausing in Echo I called ahead to Taggart’s Grill and gave them the shocking news: the 12 people I had predicted had morphed into 28! Then on to Henefer and onto 4 miles of I-84, past Devil’s Slide, one of the most remarkable geological formations in northern Utah. By the time we got to Taggart’s they were busy assembling two long tables to accommodate our motley crew.
The menu was impressively diverse with several specials, but I opted for my standard jalapeno burger. Yum! Overall the staff was pleasant and efficient, and very appreciative of our rides – even asked for a group photo in front to hang on their memories wall (turns out the owner is a British car fan, and even attended the recent British Field Day).
After lunch folks scattered in different directions, but a hearty band went on to Morgan and back to SLC via the East Canyon road – always a pleasure.
The color had mostly left the canyon except for the ever present and gorgeous rock formations. Jon Hermance and I had a great time playing cat and mouse (or was it catch and release) up the road to the Big Mountain overlook. That little TF sure can scoot.
I reckon it will take a week to wipe the smile off my face from this run. Kudos to Kevin Cowan for suggesting it, and the Weather Gods for saving one last day to enjoy our little cars.
Attending were Dave and Anne Spendlove, James Bryan, Kent and Kathy Jenson, Larry and Margaret Farrington, Paul Jaroch, Rich Weyland, Dave and Ron Christensen, Kevin and Marie Cowan, Rob Foye, Ari Ioannades, Drew Frink, Larry and Mary Bishop, John Progess, Jon and Susan Hermance, Laura Hermance and Mike Whipple, Gary Meldrum, Jim Stover and wife, and your obedient scribe, Gary Lindstrom.
