The weather for the Eureka Run turned out to be pretty darn nice, considering that we experienced snow earlier in the week. Everything was coming together for a trouble free drive when I received this email at 9:50am Saturday:
“There is an Easter egg hunt at the starting point.”
“Half of the children in the valley including all of their family members cars are lining the street.”
Wow, was Ritt ever correct. As we rounded the corner onto Redwood Rd from 106th South, it looked like an ant hill had been kicked over. There were cars parked every where, people were walking and running with their children, it looked like total chaos! The park where we normally gather was jammed with people, cars, trucks, even fire trucks! But of course, it’s the day before Easter and this had to be one of the LARGEST Easter Egg Hunts in the valley! It had never crossed my mind that this would/could happen.
We wanted to continue south to find another spot to meet, but what would happen to the people who came to the park expecting to find a small group of British cars? So, we pulled in and found a parking place in a red area. Others followed right behind us. Jill checked with the lady behind us who said something to the fact that by 10:10am people would be leaving and the place would be deserted shortly.
The lady was right. At exactly 10:10am all those people were making a mass exodus from the park and…into their cars. Now we had a BIG grid lock on the streets! The members of the BMCU are, if nothing else, resourceful when it comes to resolving a problem. Ritt phoned me and said that several cars had continued on to the IMC parking lot about a half mile south. Those of us that were at the Easter Egg Hunt now began to work our way out of the park and to the rest of our group.
After that, we had a pretty uneventful, enjoyable drive to Eureka and B’s Hideaway. The 27 members in 19 cars made for a beautiful moving car show. It was a great turnout for an awesome drive. Brandon and Krystal, proprietors of B’s Hideaway, made us feel right at home as we pretty much took over their new building and delighted in our hot lunch.
From there, just as in the past, the group split up into three different smaller groups to find their way back home. We even had a reprise of last year when the freight train engineer blew his horn as we passed each other. It was a lovely way to start our driving season.
Check out our Facebook page for some dynamite photos taken by Charles Eddington. Excellent job, Charles, and thanks for the pictures!
The merry band of BMCU members making the Run to Eureka were: John Progess, Sam Robinson, Tracy Bryan, David Christensen, Ron Christensen, Rob & Mary Foye, Paul Jaroch, Larry Farrington, Jerry Bletzacker, Mervin Brown,,,, Werner & Joujou Prochaska, Rory & Rita Mahony, Charle Edington, Ritt & Amy Bowen and family Lucas & Andrew, Drew Frink (sorry you had to head back home), Gary Meldrum, Donna & Pat Rich, Steen & Arlene Sorensen, Kelly Honeyman, Roger & Jill Davis.
Amazingly, several of these intrepid travelers made the trip with their convertible tops down! The weather really was that good, but many of us wimped out and kept our tops up.
