Sunday morning was a beautiful morning for a top down drive in the mountains. There were approximately 15 vehicles and 30 participants for this IMPROMPTU event. As we headed up Big Cottonwood Canyon, the cool air coming down from the mountain peaks, served to keep both engines and passengers in a comfortable temperature range. The Silver Fork restaurant was already packed and cars were parked on both sides of the road, in addition to the full parking lot. I was concerned that perhaps others had come up the canyon, found the Silver Fork jammed, and continued up to Milly’s Chalet at Brighton.
The concern was without any substance. The parking at Milly’s was “front row.” There were only a couple of other customers inside when we arrived. And arrive we did! Besides the group from the Salt Lake area, we also were met by Drew and Doug and Liz Jenson from the east side of the Wasatch.
Once inside, we took it upon ourselves to pull tables together to make two LARGE tables, seating about 15 each. The only waitress was awe struck that we kept coming in and the cook and her helper basically were certain what to do. They all knew, however, that the BMCU had arrived and their Sunday morning was going to be a busy one. In all fairness, Jim and I both attempted to contact them by phone earlier in the week, but they have no phone! Jill and I even drove up there Tuesday to scout out the place and told them that we were bringing a group up on Sunday and was that OK? They had told us no problem, so here we were.
While the kitchen workers had their heads down and were cooking as fast as they could, the waitress, using her cell phone called in extra help, and also put up a sign by the entrance that said that they were sorry, but they were not seating anyone right then. Guess we did it again; we took over the place!
Although we had to wait for our choices, the food was very good, the waitress friendly the whole time, and everyone went away from this experience with smiles on their faces. The trip back down the canyon was uneventful save for the continued increase in temperature for each foot of elevation lost. Back in the valley, it was HOT!!!
If you missed this impromptu drive, think up another one for us to do. It doesn’t need to be a long drive and it can be any day of the week. As this drive showed, let people know about the drive and they will come!
