What a FANTASTIC drive we had on the Morning Mountain Run! The weather couldn’t have been better; clear. The dreaded road construction in Big Cottonwood Canyon was pulled off to the side and traffic was moving smoothly. And, the traffic was light to non-existent. We pretty much had the Pine Canyon and Wolf Creek roads to ourselves! Perhaps best of all, no one got lost and no one was hungry. All that was left was the empty donut boxes.😁
If you haven’t checked out the pictures that have been posted by Roger H. and Charles, by all means, go to the BMCU Facebook page and you’ll get a taste of what you missed. Thanks, guys, for recording the event. I’m thinking that there will be another display coming shortly from Ron C., also.
When we entered Big Cottonwood Canyon, everyone was thinking that with the perfect weather, no coats nor hoodies would be needed. It did not take long, however, until the increase in altitude meant a decrease in ambient temperature. I think most of us turned the heaters on in our LBCs in an attempt to counter the cool/cold air swirling around our top-down convertibles. I know at one point I was driving with one hand while sitting on the other hand to warm it up! At least one member stopped to retrieve a blanket for his passenger.
By the time we arrived in Kamas, the warmth of the sun was welcomed as we met with the southern contingent. Most of us opted to leave our jackets and warmer gear on for the run over Wolf Creek Pass. It was a wise decision. Again, the road up and over Wolf Creek was smooth and devoid of traffic. It was almost like we had the road blocked off and reserved for the Club. Along the way we saw a flock of Sandhill cranes feeding in a field. The cuteness award goes to the doe and her two fawns who were still spotted, walking alongside the road. We didn’t disturb her and she stayed off the road, thank goodness, since Curt has the reputation of being a deer magnet. 🙂
Hanna was the turn around point and while some went inside the Hanna Hilton for breakfast (reported as tasty and good for a repeat visit) the rest of the group headed off either towards Tabiona or back towards Kamas. Those of us that headed to Kamas, arrived just in time to avoid a large, huge, massive Harley Davidson ride escorted by at least a dozen cops on their motorcycles with lights flashing and sirens blaring.
After the Harleys had passed, we headed north to Oakley and the Polar King for burgers and fries. Just as we parked, the place was inundated with customers. I’m glad we did not let that dissuade us from going inside. The Polar King was ready and our lunches came out in a reasonable amount of time. If you haven’t stopped there for a burger, fries, and a milkshake or sundae, put it on your list of things to do when out for a drive.
Apologies if I misspell some names, but getting up early and enjoying this awesome event were: Roger Hemingway, Jaime Echeverria, Jim Balluff, Ron Christensen, Darin Graber, Kent Jensen, Dennis & Cay Walkingshaw, Charles & Louise Edington, Duane Woolsey, Nghia Nguyen & Babe Ruth, Curt & Vicki Sydenham, James Hinckley, Todd (Cobra), Dave & Janell Vezzani, and Roger & Jill Davis. This hardy group ended the day with huge smiles on their faces.
The next scheduled BMCU event is August 19th. It is a TSD Rally being organized by Henry Morrison. The Club has not had a Time, Speed, Distance Rally in quite some time. It should be a BLAST! Henry will be posting more information as we approach the Aug 19th date.
If we survive the next hot spell, keep an eye out for other Impromptu Events. These may include dinner at some food trucks. Curt is working on the dinners.
