The Ophir/Stockton event will be held on May 3rd.🎉
It will be a PICNIC event so start thinking about what you want to have for your lunch. You may want to bring some folding chairs to sit on.
We will gather at the Maverik station at 14000 S. Redwood Rd., Riverton, UT. (NOT Saratoga Springs!) at 9:30am🕤 for a 10am departure.🕙
The canyon going back to Ophir is very pretty with steep, rocky walls. At the end of the pavement in the quaint old Ophir, we’ll make a U-turn and head back to Hwy73.
Then another right turn to head towards Stockton where there is a Sinclair convenience store and gas station.⛽ We are planning on having lunch at the ball field on the east side of town.
After lunch you may continue north on Hwy 73 to I-80 and east back to SLC and points north. Or you may choose to retrace your tracks back to Fairfield, UT and check out the Camp Floyd State Park. The choice is yours.
Put May 3rd on your BMCU event calendar for this trip around the Oquirrh Mountains!
What is Ophir? pronounced Oh’ fir. Ophir is an old mining town .
Where is Ophir? It is on the west side of the Oquirrh mountains. The other side of the Kennicott copper mine.
What are the roads like? The surface of the highway is fairly smooth. It is a busy route, and the road does have some minor bumps. Nothing our LBCs can’t handle.
Is there recreation there? The short answer is no. Further up the canyon people drive their side-by-sides and dirt bikes.
Is there a downtown area? No. There are none of the basic amenities that we’ve come to enjoy in larger cities. A small store used to be there but a sign on the door last week indicated they were out of business.
Why go there? The road into the canyon is a pretty drive and the old buildings and mining remnants are interesting to see. Think Dividend Rd on the way to Eureka. There are a few homes so we will respect their privacy.
How far is it from the starting location? From the Riverton Maverik, 14000 Redwood Rd. -> Ophir is 43 miles. From Ophir -> Stockton is 14 miles. Total is 57 miles and approximately 1 hr and 15 minutes.
Are there restrooms in Ophir? No. Please make sure you are drained before we depart the Maverik. The next facilities are in Stockton.
