I could not imagine that the weather was going to be like this, temps near seventy and sixty two up on top in Eden. Some years it has been cold and blustery but not this time. At the first stop everyone with a convertible dropped their hoods to take it all in. As before I lead our members up near the hills the whole way to Ogden Canyon, traveling at a touring pace and slowing to keep us together as there are two little tricks to the Main Street route, one in Bountiful and one in Farmington but all kept right along.
Meeting at MOJO Fly Thru coffee near Pioneer Park only Rob Foye bid us farewell to prep the XJS for paint, all others would make the drive picking up members along the way in North Salt Lake, Kaysville and Ogden with just Wes and Kathy Himle unable to go too far with fuel and maybe electrical gremlins early but in the final tally were: Larry Farrington, ’76 TR6; Gary Lindstrom, ’60 TR3A; Ari Ioannides and father ’67 MGB; Kelly Honeyman, ’77 MGB; Jerry Bletzncker and Martin Monks, ’53 MGTD; Drew Frink, ’14 Jeep; Bruce Oblad, Lotus Elice; Kurt and Vaughn Draper, ’71 MGB; Rich Wyland, ’68 TR250; John & Barbara Progess, ’60 MGA Coupe; David Christensen, ’73 MGB; and me Paul Jaroch, ’12 MINI Cooper S.
Keeping us tight together we made quite the parade through Bountiful, Centerville, Farmington, Kaysville, Ogden Canyon, Huntsville, Eden, Liberty, up and over North Ogden Divide, back through North Ogden then out to the old military depot OOALC and Steiny’s there. We observed a couple of folks quickly go for their phones to snap a picture once they got the idea what was coming through. This is our leisure run not a rally and we were all into the spirit especially basking in the warmth. I like to introduce new members to the Divide, as you climb up and out of Ogden Valley and on the way up on top your eyes see Eden and Liberty fall away to the left and then once on the downside you have the surprising and dramatic view of the Valley floor communities three times the elevation so far below. Living up here in Ogden I drive it a lot just for grins and feel fortunate I live here every time.
Steiny’s owners John and Joey Stein being former British car owners were happy to have us back and for some reason it was early so all the parking places out front on 600 W. were empty for us all in a row. Joey’s the experienced chef and has no trouble with numbers so all were taken care of promptly, John assisted Rhonda with drinks and serving. These friends are a “machine” and as usual all were pleased with everything, most remembering Steiny’s from last year’s run. Our numbers were the best attendance ever I think as the word gets out about what a close and local drive this is and it is always my pleasure to organize it, plus I know the two little kinks in the Main Street route.
Happy Season to all, next drive is our picnic out the causeway to Antelope Island. Larry is deciding the route. All will be to you very soon. This is such a peaceful destination it will make you want to live out there, you’ll see.
