July 11th was forecast to be near 100 degrees, so a very warm drive was expected for our annual Trappers Loop drive. However, 16 cars were pleasantly greeted by fantastic, cool weather and overcast skies for the trip! As we headed up Emigration Canyon, we played the annual game of dodge the cyclists as we headed for what looked like a bit of rain towards East Canyon. The weather held and as we approached the reservoir, we began to see signs posted which read “Event on Road ahead”. Expecting to run headlong into a group of bicycle racers or runners, we turned a bend and came face to face with a large flock of sheep. Sheep on the road, sheep on the hills, sheep everywhere! We slowly worked our way through the flock until up ahead; I noticed what appeared to be a stricken sheep in the middle of the road. Had it been hit? As we got closer, it became apparent that the stricken sheep was in fact the flocks guardian sheepdog lying right in the middle of the road, right on the stripes that separate the lanes! I whistled to him and he gave me a look of disdain as if to say, don’t mess with me or the flock and keep it slowed down buddy!
We wound our way through the flock and on into Morgan. As we arrived at the Phillips station for a bit of refreshment and to stretch and take photos, we noticed that we were a couple of people short of what we had started with. Those unfortunate breakdowns have been chronicled elsewhere, but I hope everyone got home safely. I think we need to work on that aspect of all our drives as I failed to have a chase car available during this drive and we should be able to count on each other during these occurrences.
We continued on up into Mountain Green and the Snow Basin area onto SR226, the best sports car road around these parts and diced with all the curves doing our best Juan Manuel Fangio or Sterling Moss impressions until we came out into Ogden Canyon and down to the Oaks for some great lunch time fare.
The cars were great, the people were great, the weather could not have been better and the food was good as always.
